What is a Doula?

A Doula is a woman who is passionate about the needs, hopes and dreams of a Pregnant woman as she grows, births and cares for her baby. She supports by offering Practical, Emotional and Informational support.

A pregnancy is a journey to motherhood and there are twists and turns as well as straight pathways along the way; a Doula helps to navigate the road to birth and beyond.

Although aware of the medical aspects of labour and birth, a Doula is not a medical professional and her role is not to replace one; she will work with a range of health care professionals as they have the common goal of caring for the birthing person. A Doula is able to spend extended periods of time supporting the mother to be, encouraging her to feel empowered by obtaining the care she deserves for the birth of her choice; she gives consistent support throughout the pregnancy, on the big day and the following days afterwards.

A Doula offers helpful suggestions with the aim to empower her clients, she does not advise or lead. She will share knowledge, advocate for her clients, answer questions and signpost to appropriate advice and support services; she will seek an understanding of a situation and help a woman to organise her thoughts and gain perspectives, which will help her to make the right decisions for herself and her family. A Doula provides confidential and trusted friendship, a non-judgemental presence who is championing the success of women.

Whilst 'Mothering the Mother', a Doula provides reassurance, care and loving kindness with strength, determination and commitment.

The support may be from the start of the pregnancy right through to the first few weeks after the birth but a pregnant woman may enlist Doula services at any point in her pregnancy. Some new mothers find they need a bit of help when things are particularly challenging, scary, overwhelming, or simply feeling exhausted and need a trusted helping hand. Breastfeeding support, settling baby, helping with chores while mum catches up with sleep are all Postpartum services that bring relief to a new mum as she adjusts to her 'new normal'.

All women deserve a Doula!

*There are a few men in a Doula role too! I use 'woman' and 'she/her' as reference to myself and my pronouns.
